Most drug testing methods involve analyzing urine specimens. This process is known as urinalysis. The results of your urine drug test are displayed as "positive" or "negative" for illegal drugs. A positive test means the drug has been used in the recent past. Urinalysis tests cannot determine the exact time of drug usage, they just indicate the presence of drug toxins in a specimen or if a particular individual is "impaired" by the drug level found.
Urine Drug Testing is a two-stage process

This testing method is called Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). GC/MS is one of the most sensitive and accurate test yet developed. It requires an extremely expensive test machine, as well as a highly trained technician. For these reasons, GC/MS is used most often for confirmatory testing.
Process of Collecting Specimen
The urine specimen for urine drug testing is given at a collection site (a clinic or doctor's private. After a specimen is provided, it is labeled, sealed and sent to drug testing center accompanied with the necessary paperwork. Specially designed documentation tracking procedures ensure that the specimen is treated in proper way through the whole urine drug testing process.
The companies that require Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations compliance, have to take an additional step. These regulations require a specimen has to be split in two parts – primary and secondary (this is so-called "split specimen" procedure). After this, both bottles are sent to drug testing lab.
Drug testing laboratory uses only primary specimen for urine drug screening. If the urine drug testing is negative, the second bottle is destroyed. If the test is positive, the employee being tested has 72 hours to send the second specimen to another drug testing lab for re-testing.
